Valentine’s Day: Then & Now
Last week marked my sixth Valentine’s day with Hubby. Our first Valentine’s Day together in 2006, way back before we were even engaged, we went out to dinner together. We took silly pictures in a photo booth and he sent me flowers to my office.
The next Valentine’s Day we were engaged. I’m sure had some plans to celebrate the day, but a big snow storm came through and we didn’t end up doing anything.
Valentine’s Day 2008 was our first as a married couple and in our new house. To celebrate we made pink, heart shaped pancakes for dinner with K. I’d hidden silly Valentine post its all over the house for Hubby and he and K retrieved them all and stuck them to me as we made dinner.
Valentine’s 2009 I was about six months pregnant with Bink. Hubby and I took a bus to New York City for the day to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. We didn’t buy tickets ahead of time, just showed up at the theater that morning to see if they had any left and got seats in the seventh row!
2010 was Bink’s first Valentine’s Day. We again celebrated with pink heart pancakes. Bink celebrated my trying to eat K’s pink rubber ducky.
In 2011, Hubby had class on Valentine’s Day. I picked up Taco Bell for dinner with the kids and Hubby sent me tulips (can you tell they are one my favorites?).
This year, I made Bink a special bento box for lunch (actually the day before Valentine’s Day, since they were having a daycare party that day). I snapped a quick picture of Bink as I dropped him off in the morning (wearing the old red shirt the child apparently owns, even though I would have swore he had a Valentine’s Day shirt) to send to family.
Hubby and I met up for a quick lunch, since it was likely going to be the only child-free time we saw that day. He brought me flowers, which, amazingly, are still alive in a water bottle on my desk at work.
We had big plans of making dinner together and hanging out, except that I got hit with a nasty cold. Instead Bink and I snuggled in bed all sickly like and I was asleep by 8 pm. Romantic, huh?
The funny thing about Valentine’s Day to me is how differently couples celebrate it. I listened all day to different variations–big nights out. Skipping it completely. Lavish gifts.
I think the longer you are together, showing that you care each other becomes so much more about the day to day gestures than the once a year celebrations. This year my gift was the bouquet of carnations. Hubby’s gift was a Hershey’s bar and a bag of M & M’s.
What can I say? We’re fancy like that.
