Photo Story Friday-Bento Box
I’ve been obsessing about buying Bink a Bento Box for a while now. I keep seeing the gorgeous Bento lunches packed by Wendolonia and Bento Madness. I wanted in! I want to pack Bink creative, healthy, artistically designed lunches. I soooo want to be that Mom. Except that I’m nervous I won’t really follow through. What if I run out of time and don’t cut out dinosaur shaped sandwiches? What if I am not creative enough to make clementine wedges into flowers?
Last night I decided to dive in head first and load up my cart on Amazon. The super cool Bento Box, the extra set of Bento Buddies, the silicone muffin cups
. I’d just do it. I’m sure I’d love it. And I never get super excited to start something and then get distracted by something else…. Er. Anyone remember my knitting frenzy? I was all ready to check out…and then I looked at my total. Sixty dollars! For a lunch box for my ONE YEAR OLD. And the scariest part is that I did still consider it for a brief moment.
I just couldn’t do it. Instead I went to the All Green International Grocery store in search of knock-off Bento Boxes. It’s an old Giant Food store that has been converted into two groceries stores in one. One half of the store sells Latino food and the other half sells Asian food. There were limited choices and the best thing I could find was this…

It is big enough to hold a lot of food, which is good since Bink eats A LOT of food. Tomorrow he is having corn, brussel sprouts, mango, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, and a rice/bean/veggie/guacamole combo.

These four smaller containers fit inside the larger container. There is also a clear top to hold it all together. It cost $6.99. The only thing written in English on the package were the words “Made in Japan”. Each of the smaller containers have some animated vegetables (I think) on them with crazy names–Greeny, Tomaty, Bluenus, and Hubby’s favorite…

Whity. (Which we’ve been pronouncing “White-y”) Whity appears to be a woman made of cauliflower and Hubby giggled all the way home after he saw this. It also helps that our last name is White and he is easily amused. (For example, Bink’s bassinet in the hospital had the nametag “White, Baby Boy”. Hubby was no good.)
To add to the entire experience, as I was waiting in line to check out with Whity and gang, the guy before me in line tried to ask me out. He actually asked me if I came there often, then launched into this schpeel about moving there from Ohio and was I seeing anyone. Um, super smooth grocery store pick up guy, let me point you to Exhibit A—my wedding ring.
So, that was my Thursday night. How about you?

I think bento boxes are so cool and can’t wait to get a few for my daughter, when she learns not to pick it up and dump the contents all over.

Getting picked up while getting a bento box! That has to be a good night! : ) It sure is a cute box! I love Whitey too : ). Blacky’s are my favorite though.
I never cut my kids sandwhich in the shape of a dinosaur. Maybe that is what I did wrong. Darn it!

I LOVE Chinglish or in this case I guess, um, Japanglish? When I am in Asia I always buy stuff just for the butchered English.
I got some bento-type things for Nutmeg in Japantown last time I was in SF. Similar prices, mine were a little cuter but I immediately lost some of the pieces — or maybe she did at school — so they don’t fit together as nicely and I have to rubber band them. Oh, well. This year I’m also using my credit at Franklin Goose for some reusable sandwich pouches and such.
And yes, your Bink does eat a lot! My 13-month-old probably eats that much in a day — on a good day. Probably why mine is in the 1st percentile.

What a great alternative. I, too, have been tempted to order those cool boxes but can’t bring myself to pay that much…then times 3 kids forget it.
